McLEAN & ROSE in Knockbain
« on: Tuesday 07 August 18 04:44 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for some help with my McLeans please.

From SP OPRs:

Marriage 28 Nov 1789 Rosskeen
William McLean from Knockbain and Christian Rose of "this parish".

Children born to William and Christian from SP OPR index:
Elizabeth 1794 Knockbain
Margaret 1799 Knockbain
Annie 1802 Knockbain

On SP OPRs I have found a La(u)chlan McLean born and baptized Nov 8 1807 Knockbain. i thought he was mine, however his mother is Annie Rose! His father William McLean is a Smith. I can't find a Lachlan McLean with mother Christian.

"My" Lachlan, his wife and and children immigrated to Australia in 1842 and his immigration record named his parents as William McLean and Christian Rose. (In some later records Rose has been morphed into Ross). His Australian death record names his mother as Christina Ross (which I think is close enough to be the same Lachlan).

I would appreciate some assistance to find further children born to William McLean and Christian Rose, especially earlier ones which may help me identify their parents via the Scottish naming pattern. Can anyone spot them having a son called Lachlan?

OR ...

am I looking at the wrong family? Are there two William McLeans, both Smiths, in Knockbain/Munlochy - one with wife Christian Rose, and one with a wife Annie Rose?

Children for William McLean and Anne Rose are:

Lauchlan 1804 Knockbain
Lauchlan 1807 Knockbain
William 1810 Knockbain
John 1812 Knockbain

The children with mother Christian and mother Annie all seem to slot quite neatly in date wise, so could Christian and Annie be one and the same?

Slight niggle (which I would generally dismiss) ... On his 1842 immigration record Lachlan says he is 33 which means a birth around 1809 rather than 1807. He is able to read and write.

I hope all of that is not too confusing.

Thanks for any help anyone can give with this puzzle.  :)

Added: I have found a marriage in 1798 for a William McLean and an Ann Ross in Kilmuir Easter.  :-\

Ruskie,

At a quick glance, births for Christian & Annie don't overlap i.e. may I suggest, ChristiAN may have shortened her name?

Christian/Christina/Kirsty/Christy etc. are all variants of the gaelic name Chirstiona (although I can't spell it properly) without Mr Google  ::)

I haven't read through everything, heading for some sleep, brain dead   ;D

I have found 2 spellings in gaelic although there may be others?..

'Chairist́ona' & 'Cairist́ona'...I think I was quite close with 'Chirstiona' as I can only pronounce it, not spell it  ;D

Is it possible for William to have been married a 2nd time?

What were the names of your La(u)chlan's children, which may help?

Your light should be off and you should be sleeping Annie, but thank you for your thoughts.  :)

I did consider Annie being a variant or nickname for Christian. It adds a bit of weight to this theory considering William and Christian name a daughter b 1807 Annie.

I did wonder about a second marriage for William.

I purchased the 1798 Kilmuir Easter marriage for William McLean and Ann Ross - tells me nothing except they were both 'of the parish'. :-\

I also purchased the 1812 baptism for John 1812 Knockbain. As expected his father William was a Smith in Munlochy and his mother was Ann Rose. Sounds like the right/same family.

I found a site which listed the available parish registers for Knockbain but it said there were no deaths available for the area. I haven't yet checked SP, but wonder if it would be worth doing so? eg William and Ann Rose had a son Lauchlan b 1804 who obviously died as they named a son b 1807 Lauchlan too. I wonder what information his burial gives? (just thinking aloud here ....)

What were the names of your La(u)chlan's children, which may help?

Annie

Known Children in order:
William
Alexander
Lachlan
John
Ann
Margaret
James
John

They seem to have followed the naming pattern (somewhat). When my Lachlan and wife Margaret arrived in Australia they only had three children with them - William, Sandy (ie Alexander) and Anne.

Yes, I should be sleeping but...

One more to add...

"Marriage 28 Nov 1789 Rosskeen
William McLean from Knockbain and Christian Rose of "this parish"."

Children born to William and Christian from SP OPR index:
Elizabeth 1794 Knockbain
MACLEAN DONALD -  WILLM. MAC LEAN CHRISTY ROSE (FR 74) 12/02/1797
073/10 67 Knockbain
Margaret 1799 Knockbain
Annie 1802 Knockbain

I think any route to check is well worth it as anything could pop up.

Ah, got alert, thanks for kids names!

Annie

I have the 1789 Rosskeen marriage Annie (mentioned in my opening post  :)), but did not have the child Donald! So thanks for that one.  :)
