Where did John Perry come from
« on: Tuesday 07 August 18 10:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a major brick wall..

I'm looking for the origins / parents / baptism record of a John Perry born abt. 1761. I know the following:

He married a Mary Young 27-apr-1786 in St Lukes, Chelsea. This was her home parish and the witnesses were her family members.

They had 8 children all baptised in St Lukes, Chelsea; Anne 1787, John 1788, Sarah 1790, William 1792, Maria 1795, William 1798, Charles 1800, George 1807.

They lived in 7 Danvers Street Chelsea from 1790 onwards.

He is buried in St Lukes, Chelsea 20-aug-1815. Age is given as 54 hence the 1761 estimated birth date. I've seen his will 1815, no clues of origin here.

His occupation was undertaker and carpenter according to trade directories.

The only potential clue I have is an Ann Perry also living in Danvers street in 1794. was this a relative?

I cannot find a baptism record for him in St Lukes, Chelsea, and presume this was not his home parish. There are so many possible baptisms for a John Perry around this time period. How can I know which is the correct one or narrow it down?

any help/ ideas much appreciated!

If it says "of this parish" for Mary - what does it say for John nothing?

Looking at Ann Perry there is a workhouse admission for a lady of that name in 1839 - born 1764 who is a widow.

I was thinking she may be a sister to John but not if she was a widow  :-\

I see it says "of the same parish" on the marriage.

Thanks for thinking along.

Yes it says of the same parish but I can find no trace of him or a likely family before the marriage so presume this was maybe for the residency requirement. Or that he was working in the parish and gained residency that way. However I can find no likely apprenticeship records.

Regarding the workhouse link, I think the family were too well off to be in the workhouse. Could be of course, but I think unlikely
