I'm wondering if the three actually read third, it looks like gran..then an s which has been overwritten as if the writer was going to put son, then remembered her name was Mary so changed it to child.

No, I'm sure it's thre[e]. His final -d is very different, and if he was only referring to one of his grandchildren he wouldn't have put 'each... apiece'.

But I do agree about the 's' being overwritten, as though he thought of grandsons and then remembered that one of them was a girl.
