Christian name Melton
« on: Tuesday 07 August 18 15:23 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone tell me the origin of given name Melton/Milton. One of my ancestors were given this name and I wondered if it has any connection with given name Malcolm. The reason I am asking this is some of the males in family had M inserted in name eg; John M Brown. If I were to find out the meaning of this middle name I would need to send off for birth certificate ( which I do not want to do ) One relative knows M in his name is Malcom but he does not know if ancestor Melton/Milton could be origin of given name Malcolm.

It is possible that it was a surname of a parent or grandparent, surnames were often used a as first names. Have you traced the family further back

Thank you, a tall order I suppose, not going to find origin as person named Melton was adopted. Have no further information.

Several options:
Often a child was given the given or middle name from his mothers or grandmothers surname, which can be useful to use as a clue when searching for female maiden names.

It 'originally' could have come from the name of a place ancestors took their surname from, like Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire...

I have several given names in my ancestry, including Grantham, Gossford, Granville, Blay
Leicestershire:Chamberlain, Dakin, Wilkinson, Moss, Cook, Welland, Dobson, Roper,Palfreman, Squires, Hames, Goddard, Topliss, Twells,Bacon.
Northamps:Sykes, Harris, Rice,Knowles.
Rutland:Clements, Dalby, Osbourne, Durance, Smith,Christian, Royce, Richardson,Oakham, Dewey,Newbold,Cox,Chamberlaine,Brow, Cooper, Bloodworth,Clarke
Durham/Yorks:Woodend, Watson,Parker, Dowser
Suffolk/Norfolk:Groom, Coleman, Kemp, Barnard, Alden,Blomfield,Smith,Howes,Knight,Kett,Fryston
Lincolnshire:Clements, Woodend
