The Green Howards, 1921
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 11:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

We've recently discovered some documents my great-grandfather kept from his time in the army. He served during the entirety of WW1 and was discharged in 1919 but there is another document from 1921 that, if possible, I hope someone can shed some more light on as to what my great-grandfather was doing.

It's a duty certificate that states his name, rank, reg number, for 'Depot The Green Howards'. It says he 'has served continuously in the emergency from April 1921 to June 1921'.

Can anyone tell me what the 'emergency' was? Was this the troubles in Ireland? And what was the role of the Green Howards at this time?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes Ireland. There's was an emergency force sent there made up of men who were on reserve & recalled.
Did they give him a new 3 digit number?
I've noticed many men who went there were.

His regiment number in 1921 is 7 digits long, longer than the one he had during WW1.

Sorry the above isn't correct. I rushed in a bit & got my conflicts mixed up.
This will explain it better than me:
