King Edward Walk Southwark in World War 2
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 15:31 BST (UK) »
I have found my grandmother’s family living at 23 King Edward Walk in the 1939 Census, namely Benjamin S Binden’s family and His inlaws. The story passed down the family was that they returned home after an air raid to find the house destroyed, only the budgie survived!
I am hoping that someone might know if it was this house that was bombed, when I looked on google street view I can see number 23 still stands but the other side of the road is newer, is it possible that the street was renumbered after the war? If not then I must assume they moved to another address that was subsequently bombed.
Thank you.

Thank you Carol,

Yep, a while ago now I looked at that and can see that two bombs are recorded to have fallen on King Edward Walk between 7/10/1949 and 6/6/1941 as well as others nearby.

I am still curious as to whether the street numbers changed when the street was rebuilt as the current number 23 predates WW2.

Looking at the houses on the 1910 Town Plan and counting from the end 23 looks to be in the same position.
1910 https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/531296/179306/13/101860
1952, with numbers, https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/531296/179306/13/101329

Change the zoom with the - in the top left corner.

There is an entry for that address in London electoral rolls in 1946, different family.
23 King Edward Walk, St Judes ward, Southwark so it would sem the house survived.

The houses from 15 to 31 survived. See the map.

That’s great,
Wincott Street is the next address we know of and my Dad is sure they moved there having been bombed out of their home- along with the very robust budgie.
I have to assume they moved to another address between though I can’t think where.

Cheers,
Cathie
