My children have more shared DNA with a shared match than me????
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 20:14 BST (UK) »
On Ancestry a new DNA match has appeared. It shows as a shared match with my son and my daughter (I have access to their matches!).

It says I share 18.9 cM across two segments.

It also says that both my children share 21.2 cM with this chap across one segment.

I am very, very perplexed!
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

Your children's father is also related to the match in question.

Or of course a completely spurious match, although it seems a little high for that.

I am the father! I know they are mine from a Gedmatch comparison. Hence my bewilderment.

DNA doesn't make sense at times, it has a mind of it's own!

If you could persuade the match to upload to Gedmatch or similar, you might find out a little bit more.

It's like my daughter looks just like my Grandmother, her Great Grandmother only her of the 4 children and well my son might have some of her looks now that I think of it.. when my Grandmother  :P was in her 20's.. I could never figure out where my daughters looks came from.. always knew my Grandma old with white hair lol.. but a photo popped up with our family of her passport picture when she was 20!! Blimey! My son who is very close to my daughter in looks and my dad.. saw the b/w photo and said "What the heck did Steph do to her hair!" lol that exact! We pick up a little of this and a lot of that.. I have been working on seeing if me and my brother have different matches.. and yes.. I have several he doesn't have and he has some I don't have or the numbers are not even close. :) Hurray for old pics, DNA and fun finding cousins!  :P

I have the same situation with my daughter's test...several people match her higher than I do.
I doubt very much if I am related to her father - his ancestors came to New England in the 1600's, then into Quebec and the rest came from the British Isles straight to Canada by the 1870's or so.
My parents were both born in England and as far as I have found there are no links up to the latter part of the 1700's at the earliest.  I am very perplexed too!

I asked a similar question, 'cMs shared', earlier this year, and davidft kindly posted some links to articles, here's the thread:
