The reason these lanes were so important is because they were routes used constantly by the RAMC to evacuate the wounded. 17 F.A. was just along the lane at Maroc. 58 C.C.S. was at Lillers.
You can see the infamous double crassier which was held by the Germans. These were 2 giant slag heaps which gave the Germans a commanding view of the whole area. One would have to question the wisdom of putting working parties on these lanes during daylight hours knowing this. However if it had to be done someone had to do it.
