Help for Obituaries or Further Information Please
« on: Friday 10 August 18 13:13 BST (UK) »
Morning from Ireland! I'm looking for any further information my Great-Aunt and her son. Its a bit of a long post, and there's a name change along the way also so here goes. All links provided.

Catherine (Kate) Grant was born August 1st 1879 Drangan, Co. Tipperary, Ireland to Patrick Grant & Johanna Grady. She immigrated to Philadelphia is 1899: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

1900 Census in Philadelphia https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

On June 10th 1900, she has a son called Charles Swank Grant in Philadelphia Almhouse Hospital. His father is known as Charles Swank (Can't find a marriage of Kate to him)

In 1906, Kate and her son go to Ireland where she leaves him with her parents and he's on the 1911 Irish Census with them in Knockinglass, Moyglass, Co. Tipperary. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

In 1909, Kate Swank marries William Alexander Salmon in Philadelphia and her date of birth on this is 14th July 1886 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

1910 USA Census - Philadelphia: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

Kate Salmon arrives in Ireland on 18th May 1911 and travels back to America with her son who is now known as Charles Salmon https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

In 1915, they are all on the New York State Census: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

Between 1915-1925, I believe that Kate re-married, as I believe I have her and her son on the 1925 NY State Census as Kate & Charles Rogers: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

On Family Search: New York Municial Deaths, I found a possible death for a Kate Rogers:Died 15th October 1943 171 Louis Avenue, Elmont, Nassau. Was Widowed and her father's name on there was Patrick Grant.

Charles I believe was in WW1. It's the nearest relative, Kate Salmon that has me believing that it's the right person https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

I believe Charles died on 19th February 1982, as the SS Death Index has the same birthd date for him: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll… and also on U.S., Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

So I'm hoping that a death notice for Kate or Charles can be found somewhere please. And sorry for the long post. Thank you
The surnames, which I am interested in are; Maternal side: Ryan, Kevin, Grant, Grady, Gleeson, Walsh, Dwyer, Paternal side: O' Dwyer, Woodlock, Rochford & Britton - all in Tipperary; and Kelly and Hoynes in Laois.

Ryan, Campbell, Luttrell, Grant, Grahame, Bainbridge and Brown in Queensland, Australia

I have not yet found a death notice, but in case this helps:

1940 Elmont, Hempstead, Nassau Co., NY Census
Kate Rogers, widowed, age 59, born Ireland Free State, is shown with her son, Charles, age 39, born Philadelphia.  Machinist, Plain(?) Factory
A daughter*, age 28, born Coronia(?), New York is also shown living in the house.
*Not listing name as I don't like to give personal information for "recent" births.  ;)
171 Louis Avenue

PS  I could not view your links.  :-\

The above 1940 census shows both "children" as being single.  However, there is a tree on Anc*try that states the female on the 1940 census (age 28) was actually Charles' wife.

Unfortunately, the owner of the tree does not state where Charles or his wife were buried.

No idea why the links don't work, thats a pity.

I've a funny feeling the Charles did marry the girl on the 1940 census rather than it be his sister. I found a marriage in 1930 of Charles G Grant to a Florence Jackson in New York.

I've ordered the marriage cert from New York for Charles Grant to Florence Jackson. Hopefully that this is the right person, and I'll be able to chip away at the brick wall. I also obtained a death cert for a Kate Rogers in 1943, in which her father was named Patrick Grant. Son was informant and was named Charles Rogers.

Hopefully I can end this mystery soon  ;D

Charles I believe was in WW1. It's the nearest relative, Kate Salmon that has me believing that it's the right person https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll

All men of a certain age were required to register for the draft then, but it doesn't necessarily mean they were in the war.  The Veterans' Affairs record includes the initials CG, which I believe would stand for Coast Guard.  It also says he enlisted on 19 Feb. 1919 and was released on 31 Dec. 1919, which would have been after WWI ended in Nov. 1918.
