Yes, Patrick is noted as "Seaman Merchant Service" on the DC.

If I could find his record it might answer lots of questions, but I think I'd have to go to Kew for that.

Incidentally, his wife lived until the age of 95, no mean feat in the poorer streets of 19th century Liverpool!

Thanks rosie99, although this link is for men serving 1858 onwards and as Patrick was 72 in 1858 and died that year, I think (hope for his sake!) that he had left the sea by then, so it's earlier records I need.  However, without knowing any of his ships it's a problem how to proceed.

I have this problem with other merchant seaman too.
