I apologise for sounding negative, but as you don't know his date of birth, how are you to know if any possible candidates in 1939 you find are the right person?

Additionally, as Rosie says, it is possible he was in the forces, so not on the register.

When did he leave the school?

I think you need to wait until, hopefully, you get some facts from the archivist on which you can safely base your research.

I can see a couple of people on the 1939 register who are schoolmasters and are about the right age to be your man. But it's all speculation until you have a date of birth.

Born 17.01.1913 Leeds. Served with S Staffordshire Rgt 1940 - 1945.

There is no birth on freebmd that matches that date/place or on free search of 1939 register using that date of birth.  There is a birth in the Dec qtr 1913 though (Freebmd)

He served with the South Staffordshire Regiment 1940 - 1945, in Egypt, India and Burma. His army number was 165766.
