Ah, a newspaper the BNA does not have (and I haven't the funds to sub to all these different archives). . Thanks for finding it.

Would be  nice to find an official record giving his full name but that seems to be a forlorn prospect.

Thanks
John

The BNA should have that article as it is available on FindMyPast

Ah, did you mean the 'Western Daily Mercury' ? No 'Western Daily Mail' in the BNA index.

John

Looks like he missed censuses by being in Trinidad in 1891 (per that War Office record) and India in 1881.

He had the Afghanistan medal (1878-80) with a clasp for the battle of Charasia. At that time he was a private soldier so I would surmise that he joined the army in the mid-1870's.

Muster books and pay lists for the 9th Lancers might tell you more. He was with C Troop in Afghanistan.

Maybe your are right about that deserter in October 1871.  He was William Auburn 1383, 9th Lancers, aged 18. It fits.

The deserter information on Fold 3 will be from a listing in the Police Gazette. That would normally have age, place of birth, and a description.
