Ancestry has the October 1915 to December 1916 diary.  The brigade became an Army Brigade on 1 January 1917 and its diary for them is not on Ancestry but is at the National Archives for £3.50.

For the first diary.  On Ancestry, start at Card Catalogue.  Find War diaries France/Belgium/Germany.  In the search box that comes up enter 2941 in the keyword area and nothing else.  Click on the first entry and away you go!

The second is at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/96b3e108d0b1487ead8729986d50802e

Has his service record itself not survived?

A snippet of what they were up to post 1916:
On 20 January 1917, CCLXXXII Brigade was detached from 56th Division and became an Army Field Brigade, available to be attached to any formation requiring additional artillery support. For example, at the start of the Battle of Arras on 8 April 1917, CCLXXXII AFA Bde was attached to 14th (Light) Division. Again, at the start of the Battle of Cambrai on 20 November 1917, the brigade was supporting III Corps.
By the Armistice with Germany, CCLXXXII AFA Bde was operating under the command of First Army.During the Battle of the Selle (20–24 October) and the Battle of Valenciennes (1 November) it had fired in support of successful attacks by 4th Division.

Hi

Thanks to you both.

He's William Simpson, born 1895 Craghead, 107417. I've got a medal card and injury record for him but I don't think it's a service record.

I only know some other details as he was awarded a Military Medal in 1917. I'll need to check the NA link as it's for that period I'm looking for. :)

Thanks again

What you have is his pension record.(application)
Gazetted 13/12/17. You can take a few weeks off that to get a rough date he was awarded it.

Yep, it does come under pension records. I’ve not found any other service record though so I assume lost or destroyed?

Got the war diary from the NA. I'll try and work through it for a guide of where he was but no mention of him in the weeks or months prior to getting the medal. No surprise there.

His MM card shows he was in A Battery of the brigade, A/282.  Such awards were not necessarily for a specific act but for a contribution during some specific operation or time so look also for mention of A Battery doing great things.
