Please could you help with Arnold Hope's marriage to Ann around 1775?
« on: Sunday 12 August 18 22:05 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I wondered if anyone could do a look up of the marriage of Arnold Hope to an Ann (?) for me please?

Arnold Hope
Birth May 1751 • Chastleton, Oxfordshire, England
Death possibly 1789 • Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire, England

Ann (buried as Ann Hope)
Birth Abt 1849, burial 17 Apr 1822 • Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire, England (if this was the right Ann Hope).

So far I have the following children so I guess their marriage was about 1775 but could have been earlier (the only marriage of an Ann to an Arnold Hope that I could find was Ann Cox, married to Arnold Hope abt 1775 in Coventry which might be them as the Hope family worked on the canals from the generations after Arnold, maybe Arnold started the trend - the birth locations of the children may support this).

Kezia Hope(1776–1854) • Sibford Ferris, Oxfordshire, England
William Hope(1778–1850) • Chadlington, Oxfordshire, England
John Hope(1781–) • Epwell, Oxfordshire, England
Sophia Hope(1785–) • Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire, England

They may have had more children but I can't find them.

If possible I would love to know Ann's maiden name, she is my 6th great grandmother!

Best wishes,
Emma

The only one on FS in the right timescale was 1775 in Warwick to Ann Cox

Sophia bap 17 July 1785 father pauper at Swalcliffe, received into church 12 November 1785 at Epwell, pauper.
"Sophy" privately baptized Swalcliffe 13 July 1778 received into the church 12 October 1778. This one must have died.

Ann was baptized at Swalcliffe 6 April 1777, the same day their son *William was received into the church.
So the 1778 William at Chadlington must be a second child named William.

Kezia was privately baptized 22 December 1779 and received into the church 15 October 1781, the same day John was baptized at Epwell.

So the Kezia baptised 1776 at Sibford Ferris must have died.

Ref registers on ancestry

ADDED * William was privately baptised at Swalcliffe 5 March 1776

Fantastic, thank you so much for taking the time to look at this for me. I wonder if there were 2 Arnold's having children? Due to the year and records available I followed any Arnold that had a daughter called Kezia as I only knew for certain about John, her son who ended up in Shipton on Cherwell. Is it possible that they could have baptised some of the children for a second time as older children when moving to a new parish in order to receive poor relief?

Thanks for the new leads,
Best wishes,
Emma

If I understand it correctly.
If you needed poor relief you would be given it and the charge sent to your village of birth, if you became reliant upon parish relief you would be sent back to the fathers village as he was considered responsible for his family.

The children were not baptized twice, being baptized is one thing, being received into the church is another.

I see, I have never heard of being received into the church. I will look into it. Thanks again for your help.
