Robert Nields of Cheshire (19th-early 20th century)
« on: Monday 13 August 18 06:34 BST (UK) »
My granddad was Francis "Frank" Nield (1910-1984). His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all named Robert Nield, living in and around Woodford and/or Bunbury, Cheshire.

I'm trying to discover as much about them (and their wives and in-laws) as possible. I've heard Granddad's father was a dairy farmer, and Granddad told my father reportedly that he had to help his father milk 40 cows before school every day. I'm unsure if this is true or merely one of those sayings like "I had to walk fifteen miles to school in the snow, uphill both ways" to tell us younger generations how much easier we have it, lol.

Robert #3, my great-granddad, moved to Canada in 1926 with his wife Emily Sophia (Black) Nield and their children. But I don't know much at all about what their life in England would have been like. Obviously he lived through WWI, the "Great War", but I don't know if any of my family served.

I'm grateful for whatever help you can give me.

The story is probably true. Robert worked on the farm even after marriage.
There's just the one daughter born WW1 in Sept. 1915 so could have served. Unfortunately there's no service record for him but there are several Robert or R Nield's who earned war medals.
His life in England would have been typical of a farmer's son so not a bad life considering the alternative which would have been working in one of the cotton mills. No one in the family seemed to be in a rush to go anywhere looking at the 1911 census.
The name of the farm was schoolhouse farm on the junction of Woodford Rd. & Moor Lane.
This 1896 map shows where they lived. Top L/H corner:

I wonder what made my 3xgreat-grandfather Robert switch from carpentering (carpentry?) to farming? *perplexed* Seems like a huge job shift...Was there something going on between 1841-1851 in the area that would have necessitated such a change?

I cant explain social conditions in that time but it is certainly possible that a Carpennter would have been able to earn enough money to buy a Farm.

I have an Ancestor who went from being a Waiter to a Publican in 15 years so just as today people did change occps and move up in the world.

I also have another one who was a Cooper (barrell maker) in Yorkshire, then worked in Lancashire in Cotton Mills. Finally in New Zealand where they ended up a Farmer.

Is it likely that he was a tenant farmer and only paying rent

maybe? paying rent to who I wonder? in any case the farming stayed in the family two more generations, or three technically I suppose since Granddad worked on the farm as a child/teenager.  Now I'm curious about this "tenant farming" thing...
