The Tale of the Two Mary Lanes!
« on: Monday 13 August 18 10:46 BST (UK) »
I've come across a bit of a puzzle and I hope you guys might be able to suggest a way to unravel it.

Sorry for the block of text.

My 3x great grandparents were Owen (Eugene) Lane and Honora Healy. They had 9 children that I can find records for; 2 boys and 7 girls. So far I can see that at least three of the girls married Walshes, I'm a direct decendent from one of these women. Now the odd bit is that I can see they had two daughters called Mary. I'm assuming they were Mary Anne or Mary Jane etc and maybe the second name wasn't mentioned in the records but it seems odd to me.

Mary Lane of Droumscarra
Born 21st Feb 1868 to Eugene Lane and Honora Healy, baptised 23rd of Feb 1868 and her godparents were Daneil and Johanna Healy.

Mary Leane (typical variant of the name found on other records) of Droumscarra
Born 12th May 1878 to Eugene Lane and Honora Healy, baptised 13th May 1878 and her godparents were Hugh Keefe and Mary Healy. This Mary died 31st March 1901 of phthisis with her father Owen registering the death.

I have cicivl and parish records for both Mary's. By the 1901 census the 1878 Mary is dead and I couldn't find any marriage records that fit for the 1868 Mary. Any ideas on the "Tale of the Two Marys", as my dad's staring to call it?

It's an interesting family, by 1901 the daughters of Honora Walsh are living with the grandparents due to the death of both parents, sadly one of the deaths making the newspaper. Then there's Timothy who seems to have been raising his niece Elizabeth Walsh who was born in America circa 1901, with no hint of her parents but that's a puzzle for another post!  ;D

Honora Walsh nee Lane 1865-1898
Jane Lane 1866
Mary Lane 1868
Margaret Keeffe nee Lane 1869
Bridget Mary Walsh nee Lane 1871 - 1906
Johanna Walsh nee Lane 1873 -1941
Timothy Lane 1875
Mary Lane 1878 - 1901
Jeremiah Lane 1880

Thanks in advance everyone

Maybe first one died?

Have you checked deaths for 1st Mary?

There is one, for exampe, in 1st quarter 1868, Kanturk but no details posted yet. You would have to send off for the certificate.

Death results for Mary Lane from 1868 to 1878

Displaying results 1 - 98 of 98.   http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mi7/

You already have whatever District they were in, so you can select that from list on left.  See if first one died.

@Hallmark:

That's them. The family seemed to stay in the area.

@Heywood:

I had noticed that death but I'm not in a position to order the cert info to be sure just yet. It would be tragic for the family to lose both daughters called Mary if that were the case.

I had been hoping that at least one of the Mary's would have married a Walsh and had a daughter in USA to link her to Elizabeth Walsh the 9 old girl. Maybe I'll have better luck with Jane as I haven't looked for her marriage records just yet.

Thanks for the quick replies

A photocopy of the Cert is only €4.00 and can be got instantly at any Reg Office in Ireland.

Hi Hallmark,

I know, I've ordered them before but having the €4 spare so close to payday would be nice.  ;D

I've a list of certs to order after payday so I guess this is another long finger job

Do what I do...

go in and say "I need to get this Cert if mother's maiden name was Healy"

Then if they say Yes/No you will know.

If yes, then tell them you left your money in car and will have to come back some other day!  ;D  ;D
