Arthur Frederick Brown, born 15 Feb 1896
« on: Monday 13 August 18 15:05 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find the parents of Arthur Frederick Brown, born 15 Feb 1896. He married in 1920, in Bermondsey, London, and on his marriage certificate it says his father is a Joseph Brown (deceased) a cab proprieter).

I've been told by a family of his that he was born in Scotland, but thats all she knows.

Thank you in advance :)

If it's Scottish births you're after,use https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

You have to pay a small amount but the cert online gives you loads more info than an English or Welsh one does.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage

ADDED There is an Arthur Frederick Brown born the right time with father Joseph in Islington, have you discounted him.  Family tales are not always true  :)

There is no birth of an Arthur Frederick Brown in the Scottish indexes in 1896.

The only Arthur Frederick Brown in the GRO birth indexes in the March quarter of 1896 was in Islington, mother's name Hughes.

There's a family at 31 Quinn Buildings, Islington
Joseph Brown, head, married, 51, horse keeper, born Hackney
Ellen Brown, wife, 46, born Kildare
Joseph Brown, son, 14, van man, born Kildare
Frances Brown, daughter, 12, born Islington
Arthur Brown, son, 5, born  Islington
Julia Brown, daughter, 1 born Islington

There are births of Frances Fanny Brown in 1888 and Julia Brown in 1900 in Islington, mother's surname Hughes.

I suggest getting a copy of that birth certificate and if the DoB matches the DoB you already have, you've cracked it.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I think ordering his birth certificate is definitely the next move.

Thank you all again!

Don't forget that you can now order a PDF version of the birth cert from  the GRO,it will cost just £6 and they email it to you within a few days.Rather than the usual version by post for £9-25.

Don't know if anyone has looked for a baptism for this Arthur yet,it may have a DOB on it.

Off to do that now!

Possible death of his dad?

Deaths Jun 1913

Brown    Joseph   age 63    Islington    1b   208

Scrap that one ,Ellen is a widow in 1911!

Although she's only aged by 2 years since the last census(if only!)

She was born in Kildare Ireland, maybe that's where the Scotland idea came from?
