Empress of Britain
« on: Monday 13 August 18 16:50 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this is the best place for this query but....................
I am currently working on a note regarding the emigration in 1858 of a family to Adelaide, South Australia. My source tells me that they travelled on the Empress of Britain but I have not been successful in locating any information about this vessel.
Can anyone please help me on this one?
Thanks

Are you sure you have the name of the ship correct?
The Empress of Britain looks to be built much later and a transatlantic ship.

The Empress Line of ships were built by the Canadian Pacific Railway. So they would have been in the Atlantic and the Pacific.

I remember seeing the Empress of Canada when I was a child.

But the Empress of Britain?
I can see no record of it sailing into South Australia.

My source was  an obituary of one of the family. He died in 1936, aged 91 and his obit refers to his passage from England in 1858 on board "the Empress of Britain, then the largest ocean going boat."
But then after a period of 78 years  I suppose that such details will become a little confused.
Thanks again for all your contributions; I will continue the search to try and establish the reality.

Hi radstockjeff

How about Ocean Empress?

It might be better to find them on a passenger list the you be be certain of the ship's name.

Charles Uphill 17 departed Liverpool and arrived Melbourne Jan 1859 on the ship Great Britain.

Charles Uphill ( now listed as 10 ) departed Victoria for Adelaide Feb 1859 on the ship Havilah 11.

Both records are transcripts so ages may be unreliable.
