GREENHILL, James Waldie dob 1922
« on: Monday 13 August 18 23:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my grandfather, who I have been told emigrated to New Zealand after he separated from my late grandmother around 1954/1955.  I have been searching records to no avail, and I think it unlikely (but not impossible) that he did not remarry as he did not divorce my late grandmother.

His name was James Waldie Greenhill and he was born on the 20th July 1922 in teh St Rollox district of glasgow.  He served as a mechanic/technician in the navy during WWII.

He was not talked about much, so I do not have a lot to go on.

Do you know that this person has passed on?  I can't see a death on the NZ BDMH website (for someone with that DOB).

The family tree on Geni is the one that I have started.  We believe do not know if he has passed, just assume as he would be 96 of he has not so I guess it is possible.

We have the details about his medals, but not much else.

I have found his birth certificate on the Scottish records so will order that and see if that helps.  The records office here he ked when registering my mums death and no death listed for him in the UK.

I found a few James greenhills and even a James waldie, and I believe it possible he may have changed his name. I did also find a James with a dob of june 1922 that emigrated to Australia in 1960 with an Agnes (my late grandmother's middle name was Agnes and she died in 1966).  They had children with them, but given he abandoned my mum and gran when gran had rheumatoid arthritis and was bed ridden with a 4yr old child, I am not discou ting him as an utter scoundrel!

did he have siblings?  He may have kept in touch with them, at least in the beginning.

On the Scotland’s people index is just the one 1922 birth but two marriages. The second was in 1959 to a Mary Harper Sadler.   Might be worth forking out the money for that cert too.

Added
Mary Harper Greenhill died 2014 Rutherglen

Added more
She appears in the Glasgow electoral roll index and in same household is a James Greenhill and a Jennifer Greenhill.   I can’t see the original image so don’t know if James is the head of household or a son. And if Jennifer is wife of James junior or a daughter.

I see a Visit to the Mitchell Library in your future.

Mckha489 thank you for that!

I am unsure on siblings.  Can I ask where you found the electoral roll info?  I cant seem to find it (brain in addled at the moment).

Sadly not in Glasgow for a good while as a lot going on up north.
