Cyclists
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 11:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can I please ask what did cyclists  actually do?
I have a 1916 marriage certificate, the groom was a
66th East Lancashire Divisional Cyclist
Can't find his record but have googled and it says the 66 did not go to France, were a territorial unit and they could refuse to go overseas in 1914.
Reason I ask is, the witnesses in 1916 was the bride's sister and her fiancee, he was a conscientious objector.
He was fined for not reporting for duty & imprisoned for disobeying orders and refusing to do war work. I think the groom was of similar mind.
Thank you

Have you checked whether he went overseas subsequently?

My father was the Unit Cyclist for his TA group before War broke out. Using his own bicycle, he would ferry messages and small goods from the unit to local HQ and back. He had an RA pennant on the bike to show his status and got preferential treatment from other road users & police.

Thank you for that, it explains everything.
I can't find a thing for him, I wouldn't have known he served but for the marriage certificate, he was Herbert Campbell born Oldham 1884.
Thanks

No obvious record (you are probably fed up with hearing that but you are always on a 4 in 10 chance of a service record anyway).

I think refusing is a bit harsh. Territorials had the option of electing to serve overseas or not.
Those that elected to stay at home couldn't be sent overseas until 1916.
