Osmington Baptism
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 12:06 BST (UK) »
In the margin of this register appears the attached. I have seen this space used for date of birth but this is something new for me.  An earlier page suggests this may mean 'received into the church'. If so what does that mean? Doesn't baptism mean being received into the church. Thanks, Toby.

I would imagine PC is Private christening, normally done at home if the child is not expected to live.

The dates don't tally though -what is the date of the entry on the row above

I suspect clerical error.  The next entry also appears to be a private baptism and the date on that one doesn't tie up either.

I'd have thought the original entry was the 4 May 1835 baptism (with "pr" for "privately" annotated in the margin) and the # date has been added in later on subsequent receipt into the church on 2 August 1835.

There are numerous Rootschat threads on the circumstances in which private baptism took place.

Thanks for both your comments.
The line above is 12 April 1835.
Private Christening seems quite a possibility . Private  on 4 May and became stronger so that the parents brought John to the church on 2 August following. However am I missing some more subtle point?

I suspect the year date in the margin is an error, the same with the next entry, 1835 instead of 1834. Both look like private Baptisms, the 4th May entry would have been receiving into the Church the second part of the baptism, a private baptism is only the first part of the ceremony.

Thanks, but I am not convinced. There is consistency in these notes:-
5 Jan 1833        baptism      pc 10 Feb 1833
31 August 1833 baptism      pc 29 Sept
25 July 1834         ..            pc 10 Aug 1834
6 Oct. 1835           ..           pc  27 Dec 1835
