Harry and Mary Jane TURNBULL - Chester-le-Street
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 13:15 BST (UK) »
My great uncle Harry TURNBULL joined the Durham Light Infantry in 1915. At the time he was living at Brown Buildings, Chester-le-Street.
On 4th March 1916 he married Mary Jane MORTON at Holy Trinity, Pelton.
He was killed in action in Flanders on 4th March 1917 - his 1st wedding anniversary.
His widow was then living at 5 Holmlands Park, Chester-le-Street.
I wonder what happened to her and did she re-marry?

I can't be of any help as far as your query is concerned but the attached photograph which appeared in the Illustrated Chronicle on 04-Apr-1917 may be your Harry.

Hello Siretom, there is a plaque to Harry in holy Trinity church Pelton not sure if you were aware of
it,his army number tell's us he was the fifteenth member of the Battalion when it was raised as a
pioneer unit where many of the men would be miner's the Durham's were renowned for digging
trenches at a rapid pace,I would agree that the photo is certainly him. There is only one marriage in the area for a Mary J Turnbull in the September quarter of 1928 from 1917 to 1938.

Was there a Joyce Turnbull in the family?

Thanks very much for that information. I am sure that the photo is of the right Harry Turnbull.
So pleased to find out about the plaque in Holy Trinity, Pelton & glad to know he hasn't been forgotten. I am not aware of a Joyce Turnbull in the family but I will check.
Many thanks.
