It was pretty common for people of Eastern European origin to change their names to something less problematic.

I remember a girl whose surname was Iwaszkiewicza. Can you imagine trying to get people to spell that in Scotland (or in England, for that matter)? If I recall correctly her family changed their surname to Wilson!



Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Good thread, I used to work with guys called Smith & Miller whose folk were Lithuanian, Bellshill was known as Little Lithuania.

You are absolutely right Skoosh, this thread has been amazing i was up at 3 o'clock this morning fascinated and intrigued by the kind efforts of everyone

I was looking at Andruis death certificate trying to work out his parents names Father i believe to be Petras  and mother is harder Gerd???.  I cant make out her maiden name
