1st Battalion, Irish Guards. George Kennedy
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 17:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me about George Kennedy, born in Multyfarnham, Westmeath, Ireland in June 1988?
He enlisted in the Connaught Rangers in 1904, reg number 1988.
He was listed in the 1911 census at St George's, Hanover Square, London, as a private with the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards.
After that I have no information, whether he fought in WW1 and survived or didn't.
Help appreciated.
Many thanks
Gerry

I'm not sure. On the census form there is number in red overwriting the entry. It seems his might be 609. It is non-sequential, so that seems likely....

Not sure what the numbers mean but they're not service numbers as many are the same.
I did find this chap:
George Kennedy 2713 Irish Guards. Needs a little more work.
Edit:
This chap attested 4/2/07 1st. Irish Guards.
Discharged (sickness) 2/6/17. He was at this time a L/Sgt.
Served overseas from 27/8/14.
Unfortunately no service/pension record survives.

Thanks. I'll add that number to his profile in any case and see what comes up.

His Connaught Rangers service was very short 20 Jun 1904 to 13 Jul 1904- discharged for "having made a mis-statement on attestation".  He said he was 18 and a half - perhaps not true??  Other possible areas of fib - previous imprisonment/service, married, apprenticed - he said no to all those.
Record on FindMyPast.

That's great information. He did indeed lie about his age. He was definitely born in June 1888, so by 1904 he was only 15, later 16. Maybe that was why he tried another regiment.
I know from stories about other family tree members at that time and up to 1914, there was a lot of derring-do about young Irish men in England then. A career in the army, a job, a life, a future,  must have seemed very romantic to many of them. No wonder he lied about his age!

Thank you both so much for all that research. I am constantly amazed at the helpfulness of Rootschat people. I'll have a look for George further now. By the way, not being familiar with the military language, does "attested" mean what I would call enlisted?
