Alternative to Military Records???
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 19:10 BST (UK) »
I have recently found out my Great Grandfather served in WW1 via an Electoral Roll, which listed him as 'NM'.  Up to that point no-one in the family had any idea - despite both his sons being Army and serving in WW2 and his grandson being RAF.

I would love to know what he did but am struggling to find any record whatsoever, having searched for his service record, pension and medal cards to no avail.

We think he may have been in the RASC.  He would have signed up in Bootle, Liverpool and both his sons served with the Liverpool Scots.

I am wondering if there would be any other records, outside of the military, that would give more detail.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Many Thanks
Walton, Battista, Moss, Maybury, Armstrong, Walker, Greenup, Norman, Holliday, Steele, Palmer, Graham, Sieverdink

Might be worth posting his name and date/place of birth for a quick second (or more !) set of eyes to confirm no military records?

He was James Walton born 4 June 1879 in Cumberland.  He married in Bootle in 1913 and worked/lived at a dairy/carters in Blair Street (alias Blackburn Grove).  He was a farmers son and always worked with horses.

Crossing my fingers! :)

Thank you for your input...sadly I don't know his service number or anything about his service.  I have exhausted all of the above sources of information, hence I am trying to widen my search to non-military records, if there are any.

Yes he had a son in 1915... I have his birth certificate and it only states his main occupation as a Dairyman.

So not in the military at that time.
What year was the list you saw compiled. Was it 1918?

These eyes only confirm what you knew, lots of James Waltons including ASC men but none that can be positively identified.

What was his spouse's maiden name?  I find only one marriage in 1913 in the district that has Bootle and that union had two children during the war but I may well have the wrong pair.
