John Hanlon - BORN 1893 Grogan Rathdowney Queens area
« on: Wednesday 15 August 18 08:24 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace my grandfathers family, I know he left the area in 1911 as he joined the British Army and enlisted in the  Leinster Regiment,  I would so dearly like to hear from living relatives who could provide information on his family.   He died in the UK in 1969 and, not a day passes without missing him still,  hope someone can help.

Do you mean 1893? 1883?

Did he marry? if so, is father's name and occupation listed on the certificate? mother's name listed? These details will help confirm if you've found the correct John Hanlon.

Births in Ireland were registered from 1864 so you should be able to find his online (free)-

The 1901 and 1911 census are also online (free)-

Thank you I have corrected the date of his birth, yes I know from the 1911 UK census when he arrived in England, also it showed what regiment he was in and where he was from so that helped a lot.  Yes, he married in 1915 to my grandmother who was from St Austell in Cornwall, I will be applying for a copy of the marriage certificate, hopefully that will provide me with his parents names.  It would be nice as I was very close to him, I was 12 years old when he died but we used to have long chats, he was a wonderful story teller however, he never spoke of his family I guess really would love to know more about where he really came from.  Thanks once again for your help.

English marriage certificates, like Irish ones, only list fathers' names & occupations. Mothers are not listed.
