Did Elizabeth Jane Steward remarry after Decree Nisi
« on: Wednesday 15 August 18 09:22 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Jane Steward was born in Suffolk in 1865. She married Walter Gray in May 1882 at Wimbledon. He was a publican of Thames Ditton. Gray alleged that his wife had committed adultery with Col. Gordon James Douglas of the Royal Artillery who lived at Surrey Lodge, Thames Ditton. Gray filed the divorce proceedings in 1891.However the court found in favour of the Colonel and Elizabeth Jane. She was granted a Decree Absolute in 1893.

I wondered if she remarried and have found a marriage of an Elizabeth Jane Steward at St Mary's Putney by Banns in 1894. However, the photographic record of the register shows that most of the page has deteriorated and disintegrated. Only the female name is visible. I have looked at Free BMD and there is a record from Wandsworth for Dec 1894. I'm wondering if anyone can help find the new spouse? Many thanks

The Genealogist shows the spouse to be either Horace Albert NUNN or James Samuel OLDREIVE.

Have you looked for a marriage of Elizabeth Jane GRAY? She wouldn't necessarily have reverted to her maiden name.

Thank for the suggestions. I will try to follow up on them. Do names not revert to original ones after a Decree Absolute, as it completely removes the marriage? It seems to have been a very acrimonious affair through a high court. I will also see if anything appears under her married name, but the one I found is 18 months after the divorce.

Under the laws of England/Wales a person can call themselves anything they like! ;D
Just as long as there is no intention to deceive or defraud.

I am divorced - my ex-wife still uses her married name (i.e. my surname).

Divorce does not remove a marriage, it is the legal ending of a marriage leaving both partners free to remarry.

It is up to the woman how she chooses to be known afterwards. The two such remarriages I have researched in that time frame, both remarried in their first married name.

Not everyone told the truth on marriage, I have widows and widowers remarrying as spinsters and bachelors, not to mention a marriage where the groom declared he was a bachelor but was still legally married.

The birth of Elizabeth Jane Steward who married Horace Nunn appears to have been registered in Royston Cambs in 1870.

The divorcee Elizabeth would seem to have been registered as just Elizabeth in Samford, Suffolk in 1865.

Is it a coincidence that 1901 shows a family living in the same house as STEWARD Jebber

What do you think ? or am I up the wrong tree
