There was trouble in the marriage of Alfred E STANLEY and his wife Mary Ann.  He was charged with deserting her in 1876.

Here they determine maintenance amount for her - no mention of children http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article136856804

Here it mentions that Alfred STANLEY is working on the barque Lucknow, a trader between Newcastle and Adelaide  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article110991095

adding : theatning language used by Alfred STANLEY to his wife Mary Ann STANLEY http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article110991603

There is a possible death in 1876
1876 Alfred STANLEY,  father Alfred, mother Sarah, at Redfern reg 3697/1876

Hi there,

The 1884 marriage ceremony was at Christ Church Cathedral, Hexham (Newcastle, NSW) and image is available via a live link at RChat’s NSW Resources board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=369703.0

It is towards the end of the set for the period covering 1869=1885

The date of the threatening language appears to be 1 day after the court ordered Alfred to pay his wife £2 per month - probably not a coincidence   :(

The next marriage would record Mary Ann a widow regardless as to whether he had died or not. Divorce was rare and expensive. The Mary/Ann Alfred marriage would hopefully provide the names of Alfred's parents, to determine if you found the correct death.

Re:

:) widow on next marriage ... 'divorcee - petitioner' was also an option ... the C of E clergy were using that on NSW marriage registrations from around 1874 ...

:) rare and expensive ... Yes, well, err ... rare ... Divorce did not come to NSW until 1873, and expensive ... well ... ummmm .... as was usual, the NSW Supreme Court judges awarded costs to the party who did not 'win' the case.

You may find the following papers informative,

From my 19th century NSW family papers, I have a file, about 4 inches thick, from NSW Archives for a divorce.  Divorce found for the female, and all costs (add, both parties) against the male, no co-respondent named.  From the court documents ... re Costs ... these were fully detailed and were approximately £45 for the female's legal team.    Occupation for the male :  labourer.

I lost my connection for a while.  The Buttimer family arrived on the 'Lobelia' in 1863.
I  found her funeral notice.  There are no family or relatives mentioned just friends.  Rookwood General Cemetery records have her buried 5 Aug 1906.
Thank you for the Flickr marriage records I did find the Morris-Stanley marriage.

This is the death of the first wife of Henry MORRIS

MORRIS Mary J
7833/1878
Parents not known
AGE 40 Years
DIED at  Newcastle

Here is the record of her burial.

There is a note on the record-"Subcategory Parish Burials"
Someone may know if this means it was a burial at the expense of the parish

Newcastle West Roman Catholic Cemetery
Mary Jane MORRIS
Aged   40 years
Birth year   1838
Birth place   - Not Known
Died 19-Jan-878
Spouse's name   Henry Morris
Father   --- O’brady
Mother   (Unknown)

Using Trove to search "Mary Jane(t) MORRIS" brings up a number of incidents of her bad behaviour incurring fines and costs.  I suspect some addiction or mental disorder.

The daughters of this couple, Fanny (married John BRIDGES) and Ellen (married James KEITH) had some unpleasant altercations too. Fanny died in 1892.

So Henry MORRIS, died and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery. https://northerncemeteries.com.au/sandgate/deceased-search/ Some of his children are located there too.

I am sceptical of the information on the marriage certificate for the STANLEY/MORRIS union regarding his place of birth being Germany.

I have not located a marriage for MORRIS and O'BRADY.

Sue
