Help with service record and medal claim
« on: Wednesday 15 August 18 14:15 BST (UK) »
Hello.
My great grandfather served in ww1 with the royal irish fushiliers 2nd bat and died in February 1915. His name is on the Ypres memorial gate. However I'm wondering if its possible to find his service records if they still exist?? And i also have his medal card. But im wondering if someone could tell me what medals he received and if they were actually claimed?  It just says a roll number and page number. Sorry im not very clued up on army history. He is private Daniel McDonald number 4050

His medal card shows he had the Victory and the British Medals, the Roll number is against the two medals.

If he died in 1915 he would have the 15 Star also.
Odd his name's been crossed out against his entry of Jan. 1915 & note says awarded 14 Star so went earlier.
His date of entry should have been 23/8/14 so the 14 Star is correct.

Medals didn't have to be claimed in the Great War, they were sent in about 1920/21 to the man (or in this case to the family).  His card and the roll have no notations on them which would have indicated there was a problem with issuing them.

Jim1 has covered the third medal that does not appear on the card.

The action in which he lost his life was in the area of St Eloi due south of Ypres when their trenches came under attack and although a counter attack was successful, the battalion suffered 50 or so casualties.  He has no known grave hence he is commemorated on the memorial.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

The diary makes for the usual grim reading.
The C.O. did include a sketch map (albeit upside down) of the operation which was to take trench 19 which was being held by the Germans. A & C Coys. were sent out but had to cross a ditch which only had a narrow wooden bridge. The Germans waited for C Coy. to get across & opened fire with their M.G.
They were all killed or wounded.

I cannot thank you all enough. This is brilliant information. So if there was a problem issuing them. Does that maybe mean my family never received them??? And i could possibly claim them now?? I wonder why the third medal did not appear on his card?? That map is the first real piece of information other than he was in the war i have seen. Thank you so so much

As MaxD said as there's isn't a notation on his card indicates he received them. If there had been a problem there would be a lot of admin. jargon about them being returned.
His 14 Star is on a separate card of it's own.
