48th Northampton Regiment of Foot soldier George Russell in 1817 NSW or VDL
« on: Wednesday 15 August 18 16:38 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for George Russell, who appears in Northampton U.K. in 1816 as a soldier, married to Charlotte and having an infant son William b1816 baptised at St. Sepulchre in June of 1816.

Presumably he was recruited to the 48th and in the parish register there are many other soldier fathers having their children baptised from 1815 to Feb 1817. Many of those soldier fathers were living in the Barracks.

While I've read that the 48th was stationed in Ireland at that time, could Northampton have been a recruiting location and then sent to Ireland? Could there have been another Regiment using the Barracks in Northampton?

I cannot find anything at all about George Russell, not his DOB nor where he was from, nor anything about Charlotte. Did they have more children? Did he indeed come to AU as a soldier with the 48th?

However the infant son William Russell joined the 11th LT Dragoons at age 14 and when he married in 1860 stated his father was a soldier. No mention if he was deceased or living in AU, nothing.

Any advice, guidance, suggestions, opinions, books to read will be most appreciated.

Oh, and I live in Canada so physically searching in AU or UK is impossible. My research has to be on-line and through the kindness of strangers!

Thanks,
Deb

No idea of their parents names.
Don't know where they were from, DOB, marriage date, nothing  - other than their names and his occupation as a soldier and they had a child named William.

Here's a pdf with some information about the 48th Regiment when in NSW.

https://www.bda-online.org.au/files/MR9_Military.pdf

There's the BDA's index to search for free : https://www.bda-online.org.au/  I did not find him there.

I will get to my reliable reference book on the 48th over the coming weekend.  I mention it here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=616581.0

It makes good sense to me that the Northampton Regiment would have had a recruiting depot in Northampton.   :)

Fingers are crossed, as I am hoping there's an RChatter who can follow up with the various sources listed in the bda's pdf for the NSW State Library in Macquarie St, Sydney.

Here's their Contact details, perhaps an email from Canada may receive their usual helpful response.  http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/research-and-collections/ask-librarian

I found my George Russell. He was with the 1st Dragoon Guards who were stationed in Northampton...while the 48th was stationed elsewhere.

You may be interested in some info about the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton  It is very old (built around 1100) and is one of only four remaining round churches in England built on similar plans.

Some of my husband's family still live in Northampton so we've visited the town many times but I have only been inside this church once and found it very interesting. It's now surrounded by commercial buildings.

Some information here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holy_Sepulchre,_Northampton
and lots of images on Google.

I'm interested to learn that it wasn't built by the Knights Templar (as was the Temple church in London some decades later) but was built by a Crusader as thanks for his safe return.
