Thanks a million guys. The occupier had the same name as Bernard's son.

John Hyland master/occupier of the workhouse was still in Ireland in 1901 (Kildare Observer)
Your John was in America 1900, so not the same John.
Plus he was from Queen's County

Great finds.

You would expect John Hyland (I've come across him in the newspapers as master of the workhouse) would have got the spelling of Bryan's name correct if it is the correct Bryan.
