militia 1903
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 17:32 BST (UK) »
I have information on John Bridge joining the Militia  3rd Btn Sfk Reg discharged in 1903
re en-listed in 1905 same Reg. (age 29)
I am looking for his personal details i,e. where was he born, who were his parents and siblings and who did he marry.
Or indeed any other information on him would be welcome, military or otherwise.
Many thanks

His service papers say he was born in 1876 in Risby , Bury St Edmunds and that his wife's name was Nellie Bridge of 10 Church Walk, Bury St Edmunds. I haven't found the marriage yet and I can't see a John Bridge born with those details. However there is an Alfred John Bridge 4Q 1876 Bury St Edmunds 4a 547 and a possible baptism for the same man :

Alfred John Bridge 3 Feb 1878 Bury St Edmunds , parents John Bridge , tinman , and Amelia Ann , late Frost, note says born Oct 1877 .

A marriage registration would really help.

Tks Christine
The Alfred John you mention - I have checked this out in my local records office and it is not him
I feel if his marriage to Nellie could be traced that might help.
Thanks for your help

I have doubts myself about Alfred John being the right man.

I've just looked at the Register of Soldiers' Effects as it lists  a John Bridge , number 60287 Labour Corps , who died in France in 1918. He is listed in Soldiers Died in the Great War giving a birthplace of Risby, Suffolk and would appear to be the man in the service record. Soldiers' Effects lists relatives : brother David , sister Mary A and sister Hannah Martin.

His medal card gives service number 28995 Royal Fusiliers followed by 60287 Labour Corps and the entry on the Commonwealth War Graves site confirms the transfer from the Fusiliers to the Labour Corps and next of kin Mr D Bridge of 5 Church Cottages , Risby.

David Bridge  can be found easily on the census in Risby , but there is no sign of a brother John.
Very strange .

I'm still looking  ;D

Thank you for all that info. Christine.
He does seem to be a mystery. I had not tied him in with with being the John in WW1.
I could not find his marriage anywhere, that seems to be the key to finding our more about him.
Again, thanks for your help, much appreciated.

You may already have this , but I think this must be John Bridge in the 1901 census :

Stationed in St Peter Port , Guernsey

John Breach single 24 Private 3/South Suffolk Regt. birthplace Risby, Suffolk

If correct that narrows the window for a marriage , but I am suspicious that there are no marriage details given on the Service Record , other than wife Nelly Bridge.

GRO birth registrations

David Bridge, Sep Qtr 1867, Thingoe, 4A 476 - mother's maiden name Bridge

There's a John Bridge, born Thingoe Mar Qtr 1868 - but mother's maiden name is Mole. Which is mother's name for the Harry Bridge, born Mar Qtr 1866.
