1798 land tax

Would anyone know what the letter  V after a tenant's name means in the land tax redemptions?

@ bevo, without seeing this, is it not just a tick, a person who has paid up?

Skoosh.

As Skoosh says, hard to say without seeing the actual image.
Can you post it on here?

Is this what you mean? They are just ticks.

I mean the V (or whatever it is) after the name. Examples Thomas Birchall, and the ones in Bath Street.

A version of 'etc' or '&' perhaps, as there isn't enough space to write more than one name?

I've never looked at them before but just a suggestion - & Co (abbreviated further).

I think at least some of them are "&O.", probably meaning "and others".
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
