Peter/Patrick McBride
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 23:16 BST (UK) »
Would appreciate opinions and thoughts on my great great grandfather.

He died in 1891 in South Shields and was known as Peter McBride, which was also his name on the 1891 census (living in Hebburn) which says his place of birth was just Scotland.

However, he married my great great Grandmother (Mary keenan) at St Bedes, Jarrow in 1883 under the name of Patrick McBride and I cant find any record of a Peter McBride matching the known details prior to this. My first thoughts were that he might have tried to sound less Irish by changing Patrick to Peter but with the name of McBride and living in Hebburn (from what my grandparents told me of it being an Irish area) that doesnt seem to make much sense.

The 1881 census does have a Patrick McBride as a prison inmate in Newcastle that matches the information I have. My latest theory is that his change of name might be due to starting out again after leaving prison but I am not sure.

Would appreciate more experienced opinions on this.

Patrick and Peter are interchangeable names.  I have seen census entries for the same person under both names - although almost always born in Ireland

He appears to have been born 1845/46 so have you looked for him on the 1851 Scottish census?

No wonder I couldn't find him in 1881 - he is shown as born 1854 whereas the Peter McBride who died in 1891 was aged 45

His age on the the original image has a large splodge over most of it so no blame on the transcriber

In 1891 he is shown as born 1851

Hi Carole,

His father's name on the marriage certificate is Dennis. As for the death, he disappears between the 1891 and 1901 census and the death I found is the only one that matches the dates and names.
