COCKING, George: Born c1836/1837, East Retford
« on: Friday 17 August 18 13:18 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This post is more in hope than expectation.

George COCKING's parents were John and Mary COCKING, both born 1811, and he may have had only a brother, William, born 1841.   I am seeking information after he was released from prison on 16/12/1856.  In the last quarter of 1857 he could have married either Laura WYNNE (Laura WINN) or Jane BELL.

Any help appreciated and thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for that.

I was going to mention my favourite "wife" would have been Jane BELL, but I had a difficulty with her native place in later Census, 1871 and 1891 which states she was born in Lincolnshire.I shall take that as a clerical error!!! ::)

Does she state Lincolnshire in the census or does she just identify a town/village and Lincolnshire has been added for the transcription?

Both original sources for 1871 and 1891 state Newton, Lincolnshire but, of course, there is also Newton in Nottinghamshire.

Hi again, Dunham in 1861 is approx 2 miles from Newton on Trent
Really think this is wrong George Cocking though?

Newton Notts is near Bingham and in those days would be very small. She may have told them Bingham if she was at that, so to Newton Lincs, that's also quite a distance so that doesn't help.

This is difficult to judge, I was hoping she'd been born nearer Tuxford so I'd know the place, I used to live very close to there. I do know Newton Notts as I have also lived in Newton.

If I were you I'd try to find her on as many census as you can and look for continuity but as I've found with some of my relatives they adjusted their info so it can be difficult.

Good luck trying.  :)

Hi again, no luck yet with your George, but believe the one above had a mother Mary Saxby who took the name of George Cocking but never married him, the George b c 1836 East Retford had Father John Mother Mary ( nee TAYLOR)

PS Newton on Trent is Lincolnshire?
Jane gives Dunham in 1861.

John Cocking married Mary Taylor 25th February 1833 Caunton, St Andrews.
