Good Evening,

COCKING is an unusual name.....so why are there so many Georges and all born approximately the same time ??? ::)

The 1851 Census is the correct George COCKING.....he had been summarily sentenced to 3 calendar months hard labour.   He was convicted to 7 years transportation in January 1853, but later commuted to imprisonment and released on licence in December 1856.   The father/mother details are also correct.....he named his father as John COCKING in 1853, who was then resident Suttons Row, Retford.

All very confusing.....a brief description of genealogy 8)

Hi again in 1861 in Wortley, Yorkshire:-

George 25 b Tuxford
Jane 25
John 2
Mary 8 months
RG09/3455/47/13
Keyboard86

EDIT This one possibly the illegitimate son of Mary baptised Laxton living in Tuxford 1841/51
1851 HO107/2121/733/15

Baptisms Tuxford
5 Sep 1858 John son of George & Jane Cocking abode Tuxford father a labourer
9 Sep 1860 Mary   same details.
According to GRO the mothers maiden name was Bell. They were registered in East Retford.

There is also a George Cocking baptised 11 April 1845 in Tuxford , parents George and Ann.
just realised I am 10 years out...was never up to much at maths!

The 1881 and 1891 census says George was born in Egmanton.

Already mentioned Mary Cocking having her children. 1841 she is with George and Betsy. 1851 she is with George and 7 month old William.
baptisms Tuxford
25 Dec 1851 William son of Mary Cocking abode Tuxford
20 May 1860 Thomas Stafford son of Mary Cocking abode Tuxford servant.
baptism Laxton 6 Mar 1835 George son of Mary Cocking servant abode Lexington (Laxton)
A possibility that the father being John, was invented, to cover up no father known?

Thank You everyone, especially larkspur for your last contribution.

I think the situation is such that George COCKING married Jane BELL in December 1857 and all the rest of the posts you have provided fall into place.  Of course, given this is a genealogical conclusion it could be absolutely wrong ::)

For the moment,

"The 1851 Census is the correct George COCKING.....he had been summarily sentenced to 3 calendar months hard labour.   He was convicted to 7 years transportation in January 1853,"

Are you saying he was the one in the house of correction aged 15? If so this one was born in Caunton, and could not be the son of Mary baptised at Laxton, as she has her George aged 16 with her.

Ok found him Canal Row East Retford with surprise surprise parents John & Mary and brother William!

Please Note:    The John COCKING born 07/03/1840 presumably died in the 1st Q of 1840:   Reference: GRO Volume 15 Page 411.
