Looking for McMillan-Jamieson connection help.
« on: Saturday 18 August 18 18:20 BST (UK) »
I just started researching my moms side of the family. My Grandfather, George Jamieson, came from Glasgow (through Port of Detroit) in Feb 1927. He stayed in Windsor, Ont with an Aunt Helen McMillan. I have a copy of his parents (my Great Grands, William Jamieson to Mary Ann Nixon) marriage,  29, August, 1906)which shows a witness of John McMillan. William was son of John Jamieson and Annie Stewart (later Ballantyne) and Mary-Ann daughter of Edward Nixon and Grace Baxter. Any help in connecting the families would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Kimberleyx,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Background for us to reference - what you have:

US to CANADA:

George B JAMIESON, age 17 (b abt 1910)
28 Feb 1927. Travelling alone
Farm Labourer, b Glasgow Scotland
Aunt Helen McMILLAN, 309 Church St, Windsor Ontario

CANADA to US:
George B JAMIESON, age 16 yrs & 11 months (b abt 1911)
3 Sep 1927. Accompanied by brother, William JAMIESON
Farm Labourer, b Glasgow Scotland
Relative/friend from whence Came: Aunt Helen McMILLAN,  Sandwich, Ontario

CANADA Ocean Arrivals:
22 August 1924 Sailing from Gourock, on SS Montlaurier
George JAMIESON age 13, Scholar, b Scotland
Going to Canada, permanently, to join his father, William JAMIESON
At address: 309 Erie Street, Windsor, Ontario
Relative whence came: Grandparents, Mr & Mrs Edward Nixon, Saltcoats.
Form signed: by mother, Mary JAMIESON

Not entirely sure he was really going to join his father? It says father - but I'm noting: His older brother William JAMIESON, appears to have arrived in Canada in 1923 to settle and work.

So from all that -  we hoped to find either George's father with a sister Helen/Ellen JAMIESON or George's mother with a sister Helen/Ellen NIXON....and:

NIXON, is your connecting line

A tree on A*y
Edward Moore Nixon and Grace Baxter, Scotland, Glasgow, Saltcoats connections…
Had a daughter Mary, b 1885 (no details on spouse, issue, death etc)
Had a daughter Ellen, b 1897, died Richmond, Macomb, Michigan in 1990, aged 93, but no spouse name

I find:
Detroit Border Crossing: Canada to Detroit Michigan, USA
12 Oct 1927
Ellen McMILLAN
Accompanied by Husband John & children
Age 30 years, 11 mths, b Glasgow
Last Place of residence: Sandwich, Ontario
Going to Join: Sister, Mrs Jamieson, 1225? Vermont, Detroit, Michigan
Been before in US for Occasional Daily visits to Detroit
Relative whence came: Father, Edw. Nixon, Saltcoats, Scotland

So, George's mother's sister Ellen is it. Ellen/Helen often interchanged on records.

Cheers

Actually, there's another tree on A*y, which is clearly from the McMILLAN side.

It has Ellen named as Ellen McMillan Baxter - but no parents details.
Passed away 1990, Macomb.
There is a photo of her - and of her husband, John.
7 Children, likely the tree own is owned by one of her  grandchildren

She was in Michigan 1930 & 1940 Census with her family

If you have access to A*y,  either at home or in a library - making contact thence with her family will easy I think  :)

Cheers
