Violet Muriel Swift / Turner
« on: Saturday 18 August 18 19:20 BST (UK) »
I'm having trouble finding any record of my grandfather's first wife after they separated in the 1930s. The family story is that she died in the blitz (allowing my dad's parents to marry) but I can find no record of her death - either in her maiden name of Violet Muriel Swift, or her married name of Violet Muriel Turner.

I know she was born on 10 October 1904 in Frome, Somerset to Herbert Swift and Sarah Ann (nee Parfitt). She married Frank Stanley Turner on 10 March 1926 and they had two children: Roy Alexander John on 2 November 1926, and Tanis Esme on 30 January 1929 (died a few weeks later). By the time of the 1939 register, Frank had started a new family in London and Roy was living with his grandparents - I can find no record of Violet. I also can't find any record of her remarrying.

If anyone has any ideas for where I might look for her I would be grateful.

According to GRO deaths, that one is a Violet Marion.

They may have separated but never legally divorced.

80% of files upto 1937 survive but neither are listed.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/divorce/

Of course they may be in the missing 20% or the "Death in the Blitz" gave Frank an opportunity to remarry.

However the Blitz started in  Sept 1940 and carried on to 1941 so you would have expected her to show up on the 1939 register unless she is using a significantly different name or is badly transcribed.

They only way to know for sure if they legally divorced is to ask for a 10 year search from HMCTS but each 10 years cost £65 in fees.

There are no Swift or Turner deaths with the date of birth 10 October 1904 +/- 5 years after 1969 so she may have died before 1969 and her age at death is given in years or she might have emigrated.

In 1939 there is a Violet M DRESSER b 10 Oct 1904 with a John DRESSER b 1901 in Essex. I don’t see any marriage that fits that couple so maybe......

She was Violet May.  :(
