Hiya,  I was thinking the same as you, as I wanted to order a death cert from 1968.   which I will have to order from the local RO at £10.00 per cert + £4.00 postage and it will take 10 days.

You could order a paper copy from the GRO for less money, with postage included.

The local RO version MAY have the signature for the informant, if that's important to you, but the text would otherwise be the same. Some ROs still produce typed or handwritten copies rather than scans of the register.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Note that the digitisation of the certs does not imply that you can't get certs for recent events.

You can obtain certificates from GRO for BMDs that occurred up to 6 months ago. For more recent certs, you need to contact the local  ROs.

This info only applies to BMDS for England and Wales.

£9.25 for UK.

I recently asked them about their plans with regards to this. You can see the reply here -

Very interesting but you can still order certificates  from 1837 - 2017 via their site for £9. 25 (UK rates).

Thanks everyone - that was really helpful and very interesting and I have learnt a thing or two! Seems like I will be heading down the certificate path and snail mail :)

It is only the family historians amongst us that will order the cheaper pdf's.

The pdf's are not classed as official documents in that they don't carry the seal of the GRO at the bottom.

For legal purposes they are virtually useless.

For the probate research I do I still have to buy the full £9.25 versions.

Yes you certainly do need the certificates for some purposes. The real value for me of the PDFs is the security of delivery. I live on the other side of the world from the GRO office and I can count on 2 hands the number of times certificates have gone missing (someone somewhere has a bundle of certificates that means nothing to them!) I must say, GRO has always been very good about replacing them but it is very frustrating and quite literally adds months to whatever I'm researching.
