When will GRO make available death records for 1958?
« on: Sunday 19 August 18 08:35 BST (UK) »
I went to GRO to order a death certificate PDF from 1958 only to find that the records only go up to 1957!!! Can anyone tell me when 1958 will become available please?

I don't think they have made any plans to extend the dates as yet. The facility is a pilot so that they can assess demand. See:

Thanks Gadget. Are you referring to the PDF pilot (which I hope continues for a while yet as I live a long way away and have lost quite a few certificates via snail mail). I was hoping that each year they added a death year - so perhaps next year they might add 1958? Is there a 'rule' they use to keep adding records?

I don't think they're planning to add any years at the moment.

Added - I know it's cheaper but I only receive them about a day before I would if I ordered the 'normal' one. It would be more convenient for non-British residents though.

You can still order more recent ones in the normal way though.

I've just realised that you're from Oz, which means that the postal option will take ages.

Have you any relatives/friends in Britain who could get the certs for you, scan them and send them via e-mail?

Just a thought.

Back in the early 2000's, the GRO embarked on a digitisation project nick-named DOVE. While the project was up and running births 1837-1934 & deaths 1836-1957 were digitised. No marriages were digitised.

Currently births are available as a pdf option upto 1917 and if the pdf project continus the GRO may well extend the end date on an annual basis until 2034.

There are no immediate plans to extend the digitisation project, there is neither the will nor the finance in the light of current finncial constraints.

You may find this from 2012 interestng

So what we have now is what we have.

But of course, as with all 'political' matters, this may well change in the future.

Note that the digitisation of the certs does not imply that you can't get certs for recent events.

You can obtain certificates from GRO for BMDs that occurred up to 6 months ago. For more recent certs, you need to contact the local  ROs.

This info only applies to BMDS for England and Wales.
