Marriage venues in 1849
« on: Monday 20 August 18 09:16 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for a marriage which took place in the Swindon area in Q3 1849 without success. Searches have all been in the 17 Church of England parishes concerned. At that time where else might one be permitted to marry?
Thanks, Toby.

Is the GOONS' Marriage Locator any help? (It's still a work in progress.)

Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Very pleased arthurk to learn of another tool. This time I am not in luck, but perhaps next time. Thanks, T.

You are probably going to have to get the marriage certificate. As has been pointed out, the marriage could have been in an RC or NC place of worship and those registers can be hard to track down and access. If it was the RO, there will be no extra copy so the local registrar or GRO is the only option.

As you say carobradford, a copy of the event record is often the only way. However this is not a direct ancestor and I could easily spend a great deal if I ordered certificates for them all. Be nice to fill in some gaps but not that vital.
In this particular case rosie99 , it was the marriage of Thomas Hornblow & Harriett Smith Swindon district Q3 1849.
Thanks, T.

That's helpful as I was able to extract a Registry Office marriage on one of my previous visits to the Wilts Record Office at Chippenham. I shall add it to the bucket list. T
