John was adopted at the age of 12 which is quite a late age.  Most children are adopted between birth and six to seven or so.

Not an expert at how old children can be before being adopted so I may be way off beam here.

Why are you so sure this is the correct birth?  What information do you have to support this?

He was my grandad and we found this all out when he died. He was adopted by his auntie (we always thought she was his mum).
I have nothing else on him which is a shame.

I really wanted to see if I could locate an adoption certificate for him (which now I know I can’t).
It’s a shame as she had other children after him so wanted to find out more!!

You wanted to find out why his aunt adopted him, is that the case?

Do the aunt's children have any knowledge of the reason he was adopted?

Was the aunt the maternal one or the paternal one?

Like I said earlier I wanted to find out where I could locate an adoption certificate but have now found out after these conversations because it was before 1927 I can’t locate one!
I understand years ago it was the usual thing to be adopted by family.
As far as we were concerned he was an only child. I have only found out more after researching since he died.

Yeah I found this whilst researching. She died 1941. I wonder who she lived with?

The 1939 register has her in the Kent County Mental Hospital, Maidstone as a patient.
