Nathaniel Clarke
« on: Monday 20 August 18 20:03 BST (UK) »
I have only 2 areas of research yet to complete for the family of my 3 x great grandfather, Peter Clarke. One of them concerns Peter's son, Nathaniel, who was born at Douglas, Isle of Man, British Isles on 1st May 1852. The family’s home city was Liverpool, England. Nathaniel was a mariner.

The last sight I have of him in UK is in Liverpool on a record dated 1875. I have exhausted all further sources in UK looking for him but I have found this:
New South Wales 'Register of Seamen's Discharges shows:
“13.11.1884 Nathaniel Clarke, AB (able seaman), born Isle of Man, Ship: 'Sir William Wallace' (barque), Port of Registry: Newcastle, Master: J R Brown, Nature of Voyage: By the run for the Port of Sydney.”

It appears that at that time this ship was based in Australia. I am, therefore, guessing that Nathaniel was either living in New South Wales possibly Newcastle or left ship to reside there although it could have been elsewhere in eastern Australia.

I have found him in another marine record but that did not add to my knowledge of him. I think that I have probably now also exhausted all sources of marine records. I have found persons of the same name living in New South Wales but I don't know which if any of them is him.

Can anyone give me any advice as to possible further sources of information in Australia?

Hi David

Of the three deaths in NSW only one who died in 1903 was a similar age to your man, and although the record names his father as Nathan it seems the informant did not know much about him. He was buried at the Necropolis.

TROVE has the funeral notice of this man.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14490864

TROVE also has obits for other two deaths in NSW.
The 1924 death was a man from Ireland and the 1934 death was a man from Staffordshire.

The crew on the Sir William Wallace in October 1884 does not include any with surname CLARKE.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/163267614  The Sydney Mail 11 Oct 1884.
Sir William Wallace, barque, 968  tons, Captain T R Brown, from Burrard’s Inlet, July 26.  Passengers Dr Irving and Mr Wood ...
Burrards Inlet ... as in Canada.  :)

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/135859601   Newcastle Herald 27 November 1884
Sir William Wallace, barque, 968-to load for Yokohama

So it seems he signed on after the barque arrived in Sydney from Canada and was discharged in Newcastle before the vessel left for Japan ...

Now to find him in Sydney prior to October 1884 ... :)

Rhonda,
Thank you for your reply. It could be him. I am missing something. You tell me that it states that his father's name was Nathan. I can't see this on the Rockwood Cemetery page. Maybe there is something else to click on that I have missed. Can you help me with this please.

Thanks for your replies, JM. I hope it will edge me a little further towards finding him. I will now try my query on the NSW Rootsweb forum you have recommended.
