Is she down as married or widowed?

When did they marry - can you find Elizabeth in 1841 and did she die as a widow?

It just says head of family and yes she died a widow in 1888

Just bought the census and it says widowed in 1861

Possible marriage Feb. 1847 New Monkland Lanark.

Was Elizabeth married to William Hay before that ?

Have you checked the page as it's more likely to be Dunbartonshire. Old Kilpatrick  than Dumfriesshire.

The reason that I'm suspicious of the PofB is that in 30 or so years of researching records in Dumfries and Galloway, I've not come across a place called Old Patrick.  I did a search but couldn't find such a place so maybe I've missed it. The nearest that I can think of would be Portpatrick in Wigtownshire.

I see that the family were lodgers in 1851. Could the Household Head have misunderstood or poorly written William's birthplace. The enumerator would then have copied out in his book what was written or what he though was written. This would thus be  third hand.

Just a thought.

I did wonder that myself Gadget...thought maybe accents were different....Dumfries is written first then Old Patrick after...did think it might be Portpatrick but I still am unable to find a birth or death. I also wondered if his age was wrong
I also can’t find him on the 1841 census
