Griffiths Valuation - St Anne's Parish, Shandon, Cork
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 21:51 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I know the valuation survey records for Cork were published in 1853, but is it possible that the survey data was collected years before that? I see a James Roche, Hillgrove Lane on the record for St Anne's Parish, however I know this James Roche was dead by Dec 1848.

The valuation of Ireland was made for the purpose of levying tax on property. The initial work of capturing information on every piece of property in the country took place between 1830 and the mid-1860s....

That's interesting to know. I'm looking for someone in Mayo who was (probably) alive in 1849 and definitely dead by 1855. I thought it was pointless looking at Griffiths. I'll have a re-think.
Thanks.

You're probably just checking the final printed books!

There are four distinct kinds of books involved

    Field Books
    House Books
    Tenure Books
    Quarto Books

These records contain over 2 million names. They provide a comprehensive assessment of the rental value of Irish lands and property from the mid-1820s to the mid-1850s. The books reveal where and when individuals rented or owned property and provide rare glimpses of life in pre-famine Ireland.
