Leeds Prison Records
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 23:34 BST (UK) »
On Ancestry found the name of my ancestor who was sent to Leeds Prison.

I don't subscribe to Ancestry - wonder how much information I may find about my forebear - is it worth subscribing?  Would like to have his place of birth and sate of birth.

When his name popped up another inmate also listed with him - different surname - why would this be?  Could it be an alias or could the two of them be listed on the same page.

Thanks.

It is probably either an alias name or a co-defendant

How long ago was it?

Records I've seen don't give a lot of information just name - crime - guilty or not - basic stuff but if you care to post the name(s) could have a look.

Unlikely to get a date of birth or place.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

There are also Crime records on Find My Past if you subscribe to that. Often these records are far more comprehensive than the ones on Ancestry.

In addition --- if you have the date of your ancestor's 'crime' -- you may find something in the on-line Newspapers. As Milliepede has suggested, if you provide the name and year someone may be able to assist you.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Your local library or near town/city libraries may have free access to the free Ancestry library edition & or to the free Find my past access on their free library computers usage. There is normally a time limit of 1 or 2 hours of computer use per day in the library though and you may need a few visits, but well worth it.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
