Edith H Leckie
« on: Wednesday 22 August 18 20:41 BST (UK) »
Way back on the 7th September 1892 a young girl aged 11 called Edith H Leckie fell from the cliff top in Lulworth Cove, Dorset some 380 feet and survived the fall with terrible injuries. Thankfully living close by was a most notable surgeon of his day Sir Treves who administered assistance to the young girl who has survived he felt because her clothing would have caught the ragged rocks on her way down lessening the impact of the fall.
Her mother was an Australian called Elizabeth and her father was from Ireland and was Squire T.S Leckie. They lived at the time at 1 Morningside Road, Bootle, Lancashire. I believe that the Squire was also an author and that Sir treves was actually reading one of his books when the girl fell.
Does anyone know what became of Edith in her later years? I would be most interested in knowing what happened to her.
Thank you in anticipation.

She was living with her grandmother in the 1901 Census in Wavertree, Liverpool. I can't find her after that.

There are several articles on Google, on the Doctor who saved her, which include a mention of her accident.

Thank you for that, most interesting. So she died at the age of 61, did she outlive her husband who presumably became a vicar or curate perhaps and had a parish in Devon. Will also have to try and find out what book of her father the Dr was reading at the time of the accident. Need to place some meat on the bones as they say. Did they have children. Quite a few questions still to answer about this lucky girl.

Have you checked freebmd for his death?

Freebmd shows mothers maiden name on birth entries from September qtr 1911

Edith left a will which answers some of your questions

Brilliant, so she died in a hotel near Exeter and left her money to two people, a woman and an officer in the army. I wonder if they were her offsprings. Also she outlived her husband, fascinating. I am always amazed how much you kind people can find out so readily. So it seems that despite her accident as a young girl she went on to have a good life. Did the Capt survive the war I wonder? One thing leads to another as they say.
Thank you again for your information and assistance, very much appreciated.

The people mentioned on the probate index would be the executors of her will, not necessarily the benefactors
