Oliver William Barker 1886
« on: Thursday 23 August 18 13:34 BST (UK) »
Oliver William Barker was born in Histon, Cambridge in 1886 to Robert & Eliza Barker.

I believe he emigrated to Canada in 1907 and possibly married Elizabeth Frances Gawthrop in 1912. In WW1 he served in the 184th Canadian Battalion and in May 1917 there was a report in the local paper (Cambridge)  that Captain Oliver Barker was injured in the leg and was in hospital in London.

Can anyone see any details about Oliver ... marriage , children, death etc ? If he married Elizabeth was she also from Cambridge?

Marriage took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba 18/06/1912.

On the 1921 census the couple is in Dauphin Manitoba with a Gawthrop family next to them.  Her immigration year is 1911.  Believe she arrived 31 Mar 1911 on the Empress of Ireland with a destination of Winnipeg.  Using name Annie.  On 1921 census her birth country is England.

There was an Elizabeth Frances Gawthrop born OND 1885 Chesterton Cambridge.  Yours??

Voters lists for 1935 show Oliver W. and Elizabeth in Winnipeg South.

Obit for Oliver William Barker , who died in 1968, confirming wife as Elizabeth ' Kit' Barker of 33 Cordova Street , Winnipeg. Note that it mentions his previous wife Elizabeth Frances Barker who died in 1958.

Have you read through his Service File ? If you don't have Ancestry it is available foc here :

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=24837

It mentions that his wife stayed with Mrs R Gawthroup during part of the war at Stow cum Quy in Cambridgeshire. There is quite a lot about his injury.

Thank you all for looking and the information you found. The parents of Elizabeth Frances Gawthrop did live in Stow cum Quy, and although she was baptised in Histon, Elizabeth was living in Quy with her parents in 1901.

I guess they knew each other before he emigrated. Unless they went together.

Thanks again

Bob
