In 1911 there were four people living at No.10, two had one room each and the other two in 2 rooms, although No. 9 had one family in eight rooms.

Thank you so much for your replies.
It is referenced in an address of 2 children being admitted to an industrial school in London.
It is 10 Huggin Lane, Cannon Street.

What is the date? In the London Daily News - Thursday 28 August 1902 there is a report of a fire on the upper floor of 10 Huggin Lane, Queen Victoria Street, which was a three floored building,  the top floor being the premises of a packing case maker, forty feet long and thirty feet wide used as workshops and stores.

Thank you for the reply.
The date was 1916/17

Sounds a bit of a mixed place.

The children were living in a room with a candle for heat!!
Must look up the 1911 Census.

Though earlier than you are looking at you might find this useful:

Scrap that. I should have checked the map before posting in haste (as I did).

Huggin Lane is not included in Booths poverty survey.

There is this 1886 Insurance Plan of City of London , Huggin Lane is on Vol. I: sheet 5. It is a lot earlier than 1916/17 but it does show that it was mainly occupied by businesses, not apparently much residential property. The house numbers are shown.

Thank you again for the informative replies.

The map is very interesting as it looks like the area was mainly industrial and manufacturing. Not one that would have many children living there.

I was looking for a school which they may have been enrolled in but can't find one.
Would anyone know of the nearest infant school to Huggins Lane.

Thank you

The nearest geographically would probably have been Queenhithe Ward School, which by that date had merged with Castle Baynard Ward School, but there aren’t any records for these City ward schools after 1875. But as it wasn’t primarily a residential area, they might have been sent to school elsewhere.

Personally, I would tackle this from the opposite direction – start with the Industrial School records, and work backwards from any information given there, as there may be records at LMA documenting the referral (though not online).

You may want to bear in mind that the most common reason for sending children to an industrial school in London was persistent truancy. The person responsible (parent/guardian/whoever) was normally taken to court before an industrial/special school order could be issued, and there may have been a newspaper report. That said, in 1916/17 there will probably have been other matters filling the press.

Thank you for the reply on schools.
Have been to the LMA and found the reports on the Industrial School and the Court Record of them being sent to them. The charge was one of 'Wandering' so wonder if they were not registered with a school at all. Most of the information I am posting is from those records.

The father wasn't charged or not that I could find in the Court Records of the time. I was quite surprised at that although he was to pay 2/6 towards their keep.

The Newspaper reports I have are from The Hull Daily Mail and also reports from Adelaide and new Zealand. But I haven't looked in any of the London Daily Papers of the time as I haven't access to them.
