Yes I know what you mean Ruskie.
The process I use is to start with the surname. This process is for the Assisted Immigration between 1848 - 1912.
https://data.qld.gov.au/dataset/assisted-immigration-1848-to-1912Go down the list till you find the first letter of the surname and in this instance A.
Click on the file and this brings you to

This opens up and I then save it as an Excel file and go down the list of surnames till I find the one I am seeking and in this case ALLBON. As you know a ship will come a number of times so find the date you are looking for or if no date of which you are aware then its a matter of finding the ship and gradually working through the various manifests.
For the purposes of this exercise there was only one ALLBON who came in on board the Duke of Sutherland on the 29 Dec 1888 [poor loves as they would have been roasting in the heat and humidity in December].
In the attachment titled ALLBON see at the top of the image is a heading that is 4th from the far right titled Digital .... Click on the hyperlink and it will open up the passenger list. You can download it from there also.
However this doesn't help you greatly for your specific search as there is no other ALLBON's recorded. As you say a visit to the archives may be in order.
